A lot of people agree that both listening to and creating music can have various positive effects on mood and mental health. This is most absolutely true in my case!
When I am finding it hard to find the right words that best describe how I am feeling… I will always be able to think of a song that would do this for me.
When I need to relax, I will always stick my headphones on and listen to something soothing and calming. Because of its rhythmic and repetitive aspects, music engages the neocortex of our brain which can help to calm us.
When I need something productive to do, I will play an instrument, sing or write some lyrics for a song. Songwriting provides opportunities for expression in a positive and rewarding way. Have you ever heard a song and been made to reflect on your own thoughts and experiences? I always say… there is a song for everything.
I have been singing and making music for years but have never had the confidence to share it with anyone due to being too embarassed. Who needs Simon Cowell when we can be our own worst critic?!
